The Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico is experiencing power cuts as a result of tropical Storm Ernesto, leaving more than half of homes and businesses without electricity, the BBC reports.
The storm, on Wednesday, developed into a category 1 hurricane, with winds up to 140km/h. It is expected to make landfall in Bermuda on Friday, according to forecasts, with a major hurricane predicted in the next 2 days.

According to Juan Saca, CEO of the Island’s main power supplier LUMA, thousands of employees are working in the field to “re-establish service.”
“We have to evaluate what needs to be done to be able to resolve it,” Saca told Reuters.
Puerto Rico’s power infrastructure has been severely damaged by hurricanes in the past. In 2022, Hurricane Fiona caused widespread outages, cutting off power to 80% of the island’s homes and businesses for nearly a month.
