For over 25 years, Steven Martin Cowan has lived and breathed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). What started as a personal interest grew into a lifelong commitment that has helped shape the sport’s presence in the United Kingdom.

Born and raised in the UK, Cowan discovered BJJ at a time when very few people in the country had even heard of it. With limited access to quality instruction and no established training infrastructure, he had to go the extra mile—literally.

He travelled across Europe and to Brazil, learning from respected figures such as European Champion Ze Marcelo and others who had direct links to the roots of the sport.

Over time, Cowan grew from a dedicated student into a respected black belt, coach, and leader. His career is marked by consistency, passion, and a clear vision for spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to those willing to learn. But among all he has done, three major achievements stand out as the defining highlights of his journey.

1. His Success in Competition
Cowan earned his place on the competitive stage with years of hard work and training. He has won multiple medals at both national and international tournaments, with his most notable results being silver medals at the IBJJF European Championships in 2005, 2008, and 2009. These are some of the most difficult and respected tournaments in the BJJ world, attracting top athletes from across the globe.

In addition to his European medals, Cowan also claimed podium finishes at major competitions such as the British Open and other national-level events. His performances have earned him the respect of competitors and coaches alike, both in the UK and abroad.

2. His Students’ Achievements
Even more impressive than his own wins are the results of the students he has coached over the years. Under his guidance, a new generation of athletes has flourished. Three of his most notable students, Daddy Kabuiku, Michael Ford, and Luke Platten—have all won major tournaments including the European Championships, the British Open, and the English Open.

These victories reflect Cowan’s deep understanding of the sport, not just in how to fight, but in how to teach. His ability to break down techniques, inspire hard work, and prepare his students mentally and physically has helped them rise to the top.

3. His Contribution to BJJ in Norfolk, UK
Perhaps Cowan’s most lasting contribution is the role he played in bringing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Norfolk. When he started teaching in the area, BJJ was almost unknown.

There were no local academies or instructors, and few people knew what the sport was about. Cowan changed that. Through years of dedication, he introduced BJJ to the region and built a strong community around it. His academy, Icon Jiu-Jitsu Team Norwich, has become a respected name in UK martial arts. More than just a place to train, it’s a space where discipline, respect, and personal growth are part of the daily routine. Through this academy, Cowan has helped hundreds of students discover the benefits of martial arts—not just in competition, but in everyday life.

Steven Martin Cowan’s story is one of persistence and purpose. His career has been shaped by a drive to learn, a love for teaching, and a desire to leave a lasting impact on the sport he holds dear. Whether standing on the podium, coaching a champion, or building a martial arts culture from the ground up, Cowan’s three big wins continue to speak for themselves and his influence shows no signs of slowing down.
