Electoral officers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups and community leaders have met in Maiduguri, Borno State capital to review community participation in the 2023 general election election ahead of 2027 polls.
According to the organisers, a non governmental organization, SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria, the stakeholders meeting focuses on review of the strategy used in the last general election and developing actionable strategy that will lead to peaceful conduct of the 2027 polls in the state.
Consortium Manager for the programme, David Gabriel said the meeting seeks to find out how the the Independent National Electrical Commission (INEC) collaborate with other stakeholders and community members to conduct the 2023 general election peacefully in the state.
“We want to review the community strategies that worked during the last general election to get their feedback. We want to get observation, to design the strategy we can adopt in the next poll based on their recommendation so that the next election can be inclusive and peaceful,” he told journalists at the sideline of the engagement.
He observed that Borno was one of the few states in the country that experienced peaceful election in 2023.
He said the initiative funded by the European Union include series of strategic pre-election activities such as community sensitization forums, conferences of traditional and religious leaders, conferences for non-state actors, and training of youths and women on citizen journalism during elections.
Participants at the meeting urged the organization to sustain the programme.
