St Dennis House emerged overall champions at the 61st Annual Inter-House Sports Competition of St Finbarr’s College, Lagos, as the institution marked its 70th anniversary celebration.
President of the St Finbarr’s College Old Students Association, Patrick Doyle, lauded all participants, describing them as winners for their enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The colourful sporting event, held on Friday at the college’s sports facility, featured athletes from four houses competing across nine events at both Junior and Senior levels. The disciplines included track and field events such as athletics, javelin, shot put, discus and high jump, alongside indoor games like badminton, table tennis, scrabble and chess.
In a closely contested competition, St Dennis House topped the medals table with 12 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals, amassing a total of 27 medals. St Joseph House finished second with eight gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals (24 total), while St Paul secured third place with five gold, 11 silver and eight bronze medals. St Peter’s House placed fourth with 19 medals, comprising seven gold, four silver and eight bronze.
The college Administrator, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Babalola, charged the students to compete with passion and uphold the values of discipline and excellence, in line with the school’s enduring vision of holistic development — nurturing the mind, heart and body.

Also speaking at the event, Doyle expressed delight at the successful hosting of the competition and commended both students and alumni for their contributions.
“It was an interesting moment seeing the students take part in several events during the day,” he said. “I appreciate all the old students, both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, for supporting this year’s event, and I commend the students for their exemplary conduct.
“Inter-House Sports has always been an integral part of the school’s activities because of the need to balance education and sports in an individual’s life. I am happy that we successfully concluded this year’s edition.”
The event also featured an invitational relay race involving 26 leading secondary schools, including CMS Grammar School, Bariga, and Queens College, adding further excitement to the anniversary celebrations.
