SSANU, NASU shut OAU campus

From Lateef Dada, Osogbo

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Monday, shut the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, in protest to demand fair treatment by the Federal Government.

The protesters prevented vehicles from entering the campus thus forcing the students and other workers to trek some kilometres to the campus.

The SSANU Chairman, Comrade Taiwo Arobadi, described the recent payment of four month’s backlog of salaries to only the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU), as a sentiment and attempt to undermine the relevance of the unions in the ivory tower.

He noted that the protest would be accompanied by a seven-day warning strike to press home their demands from the government.

Their demands, according to Arobadi, include the need for the federal government to treat all University unions equally; and release all appropriated funds for federal universities among others.

Students of the OAU Staff school, gardeners, traders, and others, were given entrance to the university but all offices were shut.
