Spain defeated England 3-2 in a thrilling UEFA Nations League encounter at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
Spain took an early lead in the second minute after England defender Marc Guehi’s mistake allowed Lamine Yamal to put the visitors ahead.
England responded strongly and eventually restored parity through Anthony Gordon, who finished after being set up by Jude Bellingham.
The Three Lions completed the turnaround before half-time when captain Harry Kane converted a cross from Nico O’Reilly to give England a 2-1 lead.
Spain returned from the break determined to change the outcome and found an equaliser through substitute Alex Baena.
The visitors continued to threaten and eventually completed their comeback when Baena played a through ball to Mikel Oyarzabal, who finished calmly to put Spain 3-2 ahead.
England were handed a late opportunity to draw level after being awarded a penalty, but Kane was unable to convert as his effort struck the crossbar after he slipped during the attempt.
Spain held on during the closing stages to secure a 3-2 victory and make a winning start to their Nations League campaign.
The defeat was a disappointing return to the top tier of the Nations League for England, who had earned promotion back to League A after winning their group in the previous edition.
The result also gives Spain another victory over England following their 2-1 triumph in the Euro 2024 final.
England will now look to bounce back in their next Nations League fixture against Czechia, while Spain will seek to build on their impressive opening victory.
