Spain strengthens relations with Nigeria with visit of war ship to Lagos

In a bid to bolster cooperation and maritime security efforts between Spain and Nigeria, the Spanish Naval Ship (SNS) BAM FUROR paid a significant visit to the Western Naval Command. This visit, occurring on Wednesday, highlights the shared commitment of both nations towards fortifying their partnership in the Gulf of Guinea region.

During the visit, Mr. Juan Sell, the Spanish Ambassador to Nigeria, emphasized Spain’s active participation in the European Union’s Coordinated Maritime presence, aimed at safeguarding maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. Ambassador Sell underscored the mutual challenges faced by both countries in ensuring the safety of maritime trade and activities at sea, stressing the importance of collaborative endeavors.

Acknowledging Nigeria’s pivotal role in the region, Ambassador Sell expressed Spain’s readiness to support the country in its maritime security initiatives. He lauded the dedication of the Nigerian Navy and reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to enhancing the relationship between the two nations’ navies and overall bilateral ties.

Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, welcomed Spain’s active engagement in maritime security collaborations in the Gulf of Guinea. He highlighted Spain’s membership in the G7++ Friends of the Gulf of Guinea and its participation in initiatives like the Obangame Express 2024, showcasing the depth of cooperation between the two countries.

Rear Admiral Hassan also highlighted the positive trade balance between Nigeria and Spain, expressing optimism for further collaboration in trade and economic endeavors. He noted recent interactions between the Nigerian Navy and its Spanish counterparts, including a visit by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, to Spain, which is expected to yield positive outcomes in terms of training, shipbuilding, and military exchanges.

The visit of the Spanish Naval Ship BAM FUROR underscores the growing partnership between Spain and Nigeria, particularly in the realm of maritime security. Both countries remain committed to deepening their cooperation to address common challenges and promote stability and prosperity in the Gulf of Guinea region.
