The SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria has expressed deep concern and sorrow over the recent tragic events in Plateau State.
A statement from the Village recalled how unidentified gunmen attacked 17 communities on Christmas Eve, resulting in the loss of approximately 140 lives, including children and women. “Our hearts go out to the affected families and communities during this distressing time.
“The far-reaching implications of such incidents, particularly for the children, are profound. Families and communities grapple with the aftermath, disrupting stability and security crucial for the welfare of children. Urgent and comprehensive responses are required to address the diverse challenges facing those affected by this tragedy.
“Recognizing the pivotal role of women in every household, and the children as the assured future of Nigeria, immediate action is imperative to prevent a continuous decline in the future leadership of the country. Reports of delayed security interventions highlight the need for swift and efficient actions to ensure the well-being of communities. Safeguarding vulnerable populations, especially children, requires collaborative efforts from government authorities, security agencies, and humanitarian organisations.
“We stand ready to collaborate with the government and all Stakeholders to provide support and assistance, ensuring the highest level of protection for affected children and women.
“Advocating for a comprehensive inquiry into the events surrounding the attacks, we call on the government and traditional councils in Plateau to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice and peace is restored in conflict-hit areas. As an organisation committed to the welfare of children and families, we stress the importance of tangible action in ensuring the protection of lives, particularly those of children and women.
“While extending condolences to the Plateau State Government and families affected, SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria calls on relevant government agencies, authorities, and stakeholders to prioritise the protection of children and women as a fundamental aspect of governance. In line with our mission, we remain dedicated to working alongside the government and stakeholders to contribute to the healing and recovery of affected communities, providing essential support to mitigate long-term impacts on children and families.
“Acknowledging the steps taken by the government to address the situation, we urge sustained and collaborative efforts to secure the affected areas and foster lasting peace. Creating an environment where the rights and well-being of children in Plateau State become a top government priority is crucial for a better future,” the statement read.
