Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), has urged consumers to always provide information to the Organisation on fake goods as to rid the country of such unwholesome products.
Director General/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SON, Millam Farouk Salim made the appeal in Aba, Abia State during a one day stakeholders’ sensitization forum, with the theme, “Boosting made in Nigeria products via standardisation”, organized by the organization.
Salim said such information became necessary as to clear the country of the obstacle impending her greatness among emerging economic giants of the world.
The SON DG/CEO assured consumers with such information of almost confidentiality, adding that SON would not in any way compromise on genuine products.
He said SON organized the forum to sensitize stakeholders on the workings of the organization and on the need for manufacturers to adhere to standard.
He regretted that in Nigeria, standard for manufactured products were made mandatory, while in advanced countries, it was voluntary, a way of life for manufacturers.
Salim said the Organisation has certified the products of over 400 companies in Nigeria, adding that companies do not need to be conglomerate before their products are certified by SON.
“There are over 400 companies in Nigeria we have certified their products, a company does not need to be a conglomerate before we certify their products”.
He said the main focus of his organization was to ensure that manufacturers produce goods that are of standard and very competitive for export and at minimized cost.
Emeka Duru, SSA to the DG/CEO of SON said they organized such forum from time to time to sensitize stakeholders of their activities.
He described Aba as a significant city in the country in the area of commerce and industry which no one should neglect.
While assuring that SON will not allow substandard products into the country, he equally assured that only certified products would be allowed for export.
He urged the Abia state government to make land available for SON to build its Abia office in Aba.
Abia state Commisioner for Industry, Akujuobi Nkoro said Abia was known for producing quality goods.
The Commissioner said through the efforts of the Okezie Ikpeazu administration, Abia has become the SME headquarters of Nigeria.
