Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called for stronger measures to protect elderly people from abuse, neglect, discrimination, and exploitation in society.
Mrs Soludo, founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, made the call, yesterday, in a message to mark the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Marked every June 15, the event seeks to promote the protection of the rights, dignity, and well-being of older persons worldwide.
The 2026 theme, “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work,” highlights the need for concrete actions to address growing challenges of elder abuse in aging societies.

Mrs Soludo said the occasion provided opportunities to reaffirm society’s commitment to safeguarding senior citizens and ensuring they live in dignity and security.
“Our elderly men and women are custodians of wisdom, culture, and values. They deserve to age with respect, care, and security, free from neglect, discrimination, exploitation or any form of abuse,” she said.
She, consequently, urged families, communities, institutions, and policymakers to work together to create environments where older persons feel valued and protected.
“Let us use this day as a reminder that how we treat our elders reflects the strength of our humanity. Together, let us champion kindness, inclusion, and support for our senior citizens, ensuring they enjoy the dignity and quality of life they truly deserve,” she said.
