…As APGA consolidates grip on Anambra
From David Onwuchekwa, Nnewi
All is set for the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo, to swear in the 21 elected local government chairpersons in the state.
The swearing-in follows the August 29, 2026 local government election, in which the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won all 21 local government areas, further underscoring the party’s dominance of the state’s political landscape.
The election marked the third local government election conducted in Anambra in over 12 years and made Soludo the first governor of the state to conduct local government elections twice while in office, within less than five years of his administration.
The last local government election before Soludo’s administration was conducted in January 2014, about two months before the expiration of former Governor Peter Obi’s second term.
The development is also seen as part of Soludo’s broader governance reform agenda, particularly his emphasis on strengthening local government administration and grassroots governance.
The outgoing local government chairpersons have completed their two-year tenure as prescribed by the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law 2024.
Of the chairpersons who served out their tenure, 10 were re-elected for another two-year term. They are from Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Idemili North, Awka North, Awka South, Anambra East, Dunukofia, Ihiala, Orumba North and Orumba South local government areas.
The remaining 11 local government areas will have new chairpersons taking over for the first time.
The inauguration of the new council leadership is expected to further energise grassroots administration across the state, with the 21 chairpersons expected to drive the implementation of the Solution Agenda in their respective local government areas over the next two years.
