The Anambra State Government has ordered total lockdown and restriction of movement across the state on Saturday, from 6am to 10am, to enable massive statewide desilting and waste evacuation exercise.

The restriction is part of activities lined up following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s declaration of a state of emergency on environmental degradation.

The exercise, which will involve markets, transport unions, youths, community leaders, churches, and residents, targets the clearing of all drainage systems and the stopping of uncontrolled sand mining, which are factors identified as major contributors to flooding and gully erosion in the state.

A press statement jointly signed by the Commissioners for Information, Dr Law Mefor, and that of Environment, Dr Clem Aguiyi, stated that only essential service providers, including security agencies, health workers, ambulances, journalists, fire service personnel, and others on essential duties are exempted from the movement restriction.

The press statement noted that the government has warned that new building constructions must include mandatory catch pits for proper management of run-off water as stipulated by law.

It also cautioned residents against dumping refuse in drains, building on waterways, erecting illegal structures, and encroaching on drainages and right of ways.

Residents of the state have been urged to fully cooperate with the exercise, as anyone who fails to comply will be prosecuted according to the relevant laws of the state.

“The environment is our existential threat. We, therefore, urge all residents to fully comply and clear their surroundings” the statement noted.
