Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has officially commenced the phased regeneration of the Onitsha Main Market in a significant step towards modernising commercial infrastructure across the state.

The state Commissioner for Housing, Mr Henry Arize, yesterday, formally handed over the designated construction site to the appointed contractor, marking the beginning of the execution phase of the project.

The transfer of possession enables the construction firm to immediately mobilise equipment and personnel to the site and commence work.

In the regeneration project, the reclaimed car parks will be transformed into covered commercial and private car parks, conveniences, a medical centre, and an area for mental repose.

Speaking shortly after meeting with traders’ market leadership and the contractors, the Housing Commissioner emphasised that, in line with the directive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the project will be executed in phases to ensure minimal disruption to daily business activities within the market.

The approach aligns with the government’s commitment to transforming Onitsha into a world-class commercial hub through the upgrading of essential trade infrastructure.

The contractor is expected to complete the project within 16 weeks, in accordance with the technical specifications provided by the state government.

The contractors confirmed that they have been fully mobilised and are ready to commence immediate construction.
