From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto

Security Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), has called on notorious bandit leader Bello Turji to demonstrate genuine commitment to peace by immediately releasing all kidnapped victims in his custody and halting attacks on rural communities.

Col. Usman’s statement followed a viral audio clip circulating on social media in which Turji expressed willingness to embrace peace and urged fellow bandit leaders to consider dialogue as a path forward.

While acknowledging the statement as a possible turning point in the region’s prolonged security crisis, Col. Usman cautioned that verbal commitments alone are not enough to restore confidence.

“If Turji is genuinely committed to peace, he must prove it by halting all forms of violence and unconditionally releasing innocent civilians being held hostage.”

He said that the safety and welfare of rural dwellers remain a top priority for the Sokoto State Government under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, and that sustainable peace must begin with trust-building actions.

“There can be no true dialogue while communities continue to live in fear and captivity. Peace begins with concrete steps that build trust.”

Col. Usman reaffirmed the state’s readiness to support any credible peace initiative that promises lasting security, but stressed that acts of criminality would not be tolerated under any guise.

He also urged stakeholders, community leaders, civil society organizations, and religious institutions to support ongoing efforts to restore peace in the region.

He called directly to Turji and others in his ranks to take the opportunity seriously by ceasing all violent operations and ensuring the safe return of all abducted individuals.
