Hundreds of women supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring their support for the party’s Sokoto East senatorial candidate, Hon. Umar Ajiya, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The women announced their defection in Achida village of, Wurno Local Government Area, where they joined other APC supporters in reaffirming their commitment to the party.
Speaking the woman leader Amina Muhammaand said they are out to mobilise more support for the senatorial candidate and other APC candidates from the national to the grassroots level.
According to her, the father was in collaboration with the Wurno Youths Vanguard for Ajiyan Sokoto.
“ This gathering is organised to unite women across our area and to provide a platform for those who had decided to join the APC to publicly identify with the party and support its candidates ahead of the elections”
She said the women are prepared to take their mobilisation beyond political gatherings by engaging residents at the grassroots, particularly women and families, and encouraging them to participate actively in the 2027 electoral process.
According to her, the women would remain united and committed to supporting Ajiya and other APC candidates, while working with the party’s existing structures to strengthen its presence across communities in Wurno.
The event brought together women who recently defected from the ADC as well as APC women supporters from different communities in the local government, with the participants reaffirming their support for Ajiya’s senatorial ambition.
In a joint declaration, the women pledged to support all APC candidates contesting the 2027 elections and promised to mobilise additional support for the party across the local government.
The development adds to the political realignments taking place in Sokoto State ahead of the 2027 elections, as political parties and their supporters intensify grassroots mobilisation across the state.
Sanusi Ayuba a political commentator in Sokoto said that the recent realignment in Wurno gives the latest gathering a broader political dimension, coming at a time when both parties are seeking to consolidate their grassroots structures ahead of the elections.
He said that Ajiya’s candidacy has made Sokoto East a key focus of early political mobilisation.
