Sokoto contingent clinches podium at Handball Premier League

From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto

Sokoto State has recorded one of its strongest national sports outings yet, after its handball contingent secured a podium finish in both the male and female categories at the second phase of the Ardova National Handball Premier League, which has just ended in Lagos.

The impressive outing, marked by discipline, teamwork, and strategic play, has positioned Sokoto as a rising force in Nigerian handball. Sports watchers say the dual second-place finish reflects the renewed energy around sports development in the state.

The male squad, Rima Strikers, was hailed for displaying exceptional “strength, resilience and consistency” across their fixtures. The team dominated in their winning streak, beating Benue Buffaloes (36–16), De Defenders (28–19), Niger United (27–22), Adamawa Warriors (10–0), Tojemarine Academy (32–16), Lagos Seasiders (36–26), COAS Shooters (39–25) and Osun United (30–23).

Not to be outdone, the female team, Rima Queens, also delivered a standout performance, dispatching Imo Grasshoppers (27–25), Rivers Queens (34–31), Omo Ogiefo Academy (28–26), Ekiti Queens (34–29) and Plateau Peacocks (27–23) to claim their second-place spot.

Players expressed gratitude to Governor Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for what they described as unwavering support to sports and youth development. They also acknowledged the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr. Engr. Mustapha Muhammad Kofar Marke, and the Permanent Secretary, Hajiya Hadiza Galadima, whose contributions, they said, played a crucial role in the teams’ successful campaign.

With its performance in Lagos, Sokoto has reaffirmed its growing reputation in the national handball scene and set the stage for even stronger showings in upcoming competitions.
