No fewer than 150 suspected bandits have reportedly drowned after a boat conveying them capsized in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State on Saturday evening.

According to local sources, the vessel said to be carrying a large number of armed men overturned while attempting to cross a water body in the area, throwing all occupants into the river.

Eyewitnesses said the incident resulted in heavy casualties, with many of those on board allegedly unable to swim.

“Preliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” a source disclosed.

Early reports indicate that none of the occupants survived the accident, although the exact number of casualties remains unverified.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have yet to issue an official statement confirming the incident or the reported death toll.

The development adds to growing security concerns in the region, where armed groups have continued to operate across several communities.
