…From the state treasury to the heights of federal administration, a seasoned public servant’s record demands rigorous examination beyond slogans.

FROM the treasury of Enugu State to the commanding heights of Nigeria’s federal bureaucracy, university governance, and partisan politics, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa has accumulated a résumé that demands critical examination beyond political slogans.
In Nigerian politics, résumés are frequently manufactured at the threshold of elections. Titles suddenly multiply, philanthropies acquire aggressive publicity departments, and yesterday’s obscurities are repackaged as elder statesmen. The story of Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, however, is considerably longer and deeper than the present electoral cycle.
At 65, Ohaa enters contemporary Enugu politics carrying what is increasingly uncommon among aspirants to high political office: decades of direct, hands-on experience in public finance, civil administration, institutional management, and the core machinery of governance itself.
His journey has traversed the Enugu State treasury, the State Executive Council, the federal Ministries of Labour, Defence, Transport, and Water Resources, the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Governing Council of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).
That breadth of exposure does not automatically confer political virtue. But it certainly makes Ohaa’s public record substantial enough to deserve rigorous and objective scrutiny.
FROM OBUOFFIA TO PUBLIC SERVICE
Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa was born on 4 February 1961 into the family of Chief Ohaa Owo of Obuoffia in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Biographical records show that he obtained his GCE in 1979 and WASC in 1980 before proceeding to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, where he earned a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Finance in 1985. He subsequently earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy and Finance in 1990 and an MBA in Banking and Finance in 1992 from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).
His professional trajectory is instructive because it was incremental rather than meteoric. Following his NYSC service with Cooperative and Commerce Bank, Ohaa served as Senior Bursar in the Enugu State Education Commission from 1986 to 1989, worked in private practice, became Personal Assistant to the State Commissioner for Finance, and served as a sub-treasurer.
By 1999, he had risen to become Accountant-General of Enugu State, serving through 2006 before being appointed Commissioner for Agriculture (2006–2007). That seven-year period managing the state’s treasury placed him directly at the fiscal heartbeat of governance—appropriation, controls, releases, and financial reporting.
RISE THROUGH FEDERAL BUREAUCRACY
In 2007, Ohaa transferred to the federal civil service as Deputy Director of Accounts in the Ministry of Labour. He subsequently served in internal audit at the Ministry of Defence, as Director of Finance and Accounts in Transport, and later in Water Resources.
In November 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Ohaa a Federal Permanent Secretary, deploying him to Youth and Sports. He later served in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, assumed office as Permanent Secretary of the FCTA in August 2017, and moved to Power in September 2020 before retiring from federal service in 2021.

ABUJA & THE FCTA YEARS
At the FCTA, Ohaa served as senior accounting officer. He drove initiatives using the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and technology to plug revenue leakages, boost internally generated revenue (IGR), and streamline land administration. His tenure oversaw the promotion of over 3,000 personnel and introduced structured written examinations for director-level positions.
At the Ministry of Power, he championed the Federal Government’s National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP), promoting local manufacturing capacity and inaugurating free technical training for graduate engineers.
ESUT COUNCIL AND PHILANTHROPY
In March 2024, Ohaa returned to Enugu public life as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of ESUT. During his tenure, he prioritized institutional governance, TETFund project completions, ICT innovation, and infrastructure upgrades, alongside personally funding inaugural lecture grants, before stepping down on 23 February 2026.
Beyond administrative offices, Ohaa has sustained community interventions. Through his “Shelter-Gives-Dignity” initiative, he has constructed homes for indigent persons in rural areas, while sponsoring scholarships and youth empowerment schemes. Within the Methodist Church Nigeria, he is a Knight of John Wesley (KJW) and former Lay President of Agbani Diocese.
TECHNOCRACY MEETS POLITICS
Having participated in the 2022 Enugu gubernatorial primary under the PDP, Ohaa’s current political engagement with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) represents an effort to channel bureaucratic experience into state renewal.
For Ohaa, the defining proposition is administrative capacity meeting governance necessity. The central questions before the electorate remain clear:
Can decades of administrative expertise translate into institutional reform?
Will public finance experience yield genuine fiscal discipline and transparent expenditure?
Can personal philanthropy transform into institutional welfare systems?
What cannot be disputed is that Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa enters the political arena with unmatched bureaucratic depth and institutional memory. Whether that background becomes the blueprint for Enugu’s next chapter is now for the citizens to decide.
