Political commentator and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, Segun Showunmi, has faced criticism on social media following his endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, with some users questioning his change of position.
Showunmi, who criticised Tinubu’s administration in 2023 over its economic policies, cabinet size and handling of palliatives, has recently defended the President’s economic reform agenda and urged Nigerians to support his second-term ambition.
Daily Sun recalled in August 2023, Showunmi faulted the administration’s policies, arguing that the government had demonstrated inconsistencies in its handling of key national issues.
However, on October 15, 2026, he publicly declared support for Tinubu’s re-election, saying Nigeria needed continuity to consolidate ongoing reforms.
His current position has triggered mixed reactions on X, formerly Twitter, with some users accusing him of abandoning his previous criticisms, while others defended his right to make independent political choices.
One user criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), writing: “Anything APC touches they corrupt. As the famous quite from Mr Half Truth goes ‘The brain of a person miraculously stops working the moment they join APC’.”
Another user defended Showunmi, suggesting that some of the criticism was driven by his support for Tinubu rather than Peter Obi.
“He’s still that smart, intelligent and a thoroughbred omoluabi. He’s @SegunShowunmi and he’s smarter than Obi 100 times,” the user wrote.
The user added: “He’s now the ‘once-smart man’ to you cos he doesn’t support that your saint Obi.”

Another commenter questioned Showunmi’s decision to support the President, writing: “When did he join the bandwagon of tinubu’s failed group for crying out loud?are we sure baba no dey use jazz for these people?”
A further critic suggested that Showunmi’s decision was connected to his previous role as Atiku’s spokesperson, alleging that he had turned to Tinubu after losing that position.
“What happened is that he miss his role as a spokesperson and since Atiku did not renew his contract he choose Tinubu and now he’s doing what he know how to do best,” the user wrote.
The commenter went on to describe Showunmi as “a political jobber” and alleged that he would not speak for anyone without receiving a benefit.
The claims about his motives were opinions expressed by the social media user; no evidence was provided in the comment to substantiate them.
Showunmi has previously defended his political choices, arguing that he has the right to associate with political figures and support candidates he believes are best placed to lead the country.
In April 2026, he defended his decision to part ways with Atiku and his visit to Tinubu, insisting that his political choices fell within his rights.
His endorsement of Tinubu has also been accompanied by arguments for policy continuity, maintaining that the administration should be given more time to consolidate its economic reforms.
The reactions reflect differing views among social media users about political consistency, party loyalty and whether politicians should be judged by their past criticisms when they later support the same leaders they once opposed.
