Seven people have been killed and 11 others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash involving a heavy-duty truck, two cars and five motorcycles at Kumo, Akko Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State.
According to an incident report by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Tashan Magariya Junction along the Gombe–Billiri route.
The report attributed the crash to brake failure, which allegedly caused the driver of a DAF trailer travelling from Gombe towards Yola to lose control and ram into two Volkswagen Golf cars and five motorcycles. The collision involved eight vehicles in total.
The FRSC report identified the seven deceased victims as four adult males, two male children and one female child.
The 11 injured victims comprised four adult males, three adult females and four female children. Their injuries included compound fractures, lacerations and bruises.
The report put the total number of people involved in the crash at 25, although it did not clarify the condition of the remaining seven people.
According to the FRSC, its personnel received a distress call at 5:32 p.m. and arrived at the scene two minutes later.
The victims were taken to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Kumo. The report also stated that 11 people received first aid.
The vehicles involved were subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the police in Kumo for further action.
The identities of the deceased and the current conditions of the injured victims were not immediately available.
The reported brake failure has raised questions about the roadworthiness of heavy-duty vehicles and the risks posed by mechanical faults to other road users.
However, the precise circumstances surrounding the crash had yet to be independently established as of the time of filing this report.
