The All Progressives Congress, APC, has suffered a setback in Cross River State as over 500 members dumped the party for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Abanwan-Erei community of Biase Local Government Area.
The mass defection was received on Saturday by the PDP House of Representatives candidate, Barr. Bassey O. Bassey, popularly known as BOB, and the House of Assembly candidate, Pastor Hon. Obia Ikika.
Welcoming the defectors, Barr. Bassey hailed their decision as “bold and patriotic”, saying it signals the people’s desire for genuine democratic renewal.
“We commend your courage and political maturity. This is a statement that the people are tired of failed promises. In the PDP, you will get equal recognition, active involvement, and full integration,” he said.
Barr. Bassey assured the new members that he remains committed to championing their interests at the National Assembly if elected.
On his part, Pastor Ikika described the defection as “a clear verdict by the people” rejecting failed leadership.
“The people have spoken. They are embracing a party that prioritizes welfare, development, and the aspirations of the citizenry,” he said. He pledged legislative excellence and grassroots development if elected into the State House of Assembly.
Also speaking, PDP State Financial Secretary, Dr. Chris Edadi, attributed the wave of defections to teamwork and grassroots mobilization. He urged members to sustain the unity as the party prepares for the general election.
“To our new members, you are welcome. The PDP offers a level playing field and equal opportunities for all,” Edadi stated.
The reception was attended by the Chapter Woman Leader, Mrs. Rose Stephen, Chapter Chairman, Ward Leader, and other party stakeholders.
