The Senate has called for the deployment of additional security personnel and the establishment of security camps along the borders of Taraba, Plateau, and Bauchi states, following the killing of about 80 people by bandits in Binari community, Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The resolution followed a motion in plenary by Isa Lau, who raised the alarm over persistent attacks on rural communities in his constituency and the growing threat to lives and property.

Lau said the latest attack had left scores dead, triggered fear and displaced residents, warning that urgent intervention was needed to prevent further bloodshed.

He lamented the continued attacks by armed bandits on rural communities, insisting that the government must fulfil its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.

The senator warned that failure to act decisively could result in further killings, destruction of communities and a worsening humanitarian crisis in the affected areas.

Contributing to the debate, Mohammed Monguno described the motion as timely, stressing that the protection of lives and property remained the primary responsibility of government.

“The primary purpose of governance is to protect the lives and property of the people,” Monguno said, commending Lau for bringing the plight of his constituents before the Senate.

The Senate subsequently urged security agencies to deploy more personnel to the affected areas and establish additional security camps to strengthen surveillance and forestall further attacks along the Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi borders.

It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide relief materials urgently to communities affected by the attacks.
