The Senate has paid glowing tributes to former Senator Anthony Adeniyi, describing him as a committed lawmaker, accomplished lawyer and loyal political leader whose contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and President Bola Tinubu’s political emergence would not be forgotten.
The Senate also observed a minute’s silence in his honour and constituted a high-powered delegation, led by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, to condole with his family.
Adeniyi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who represented Ekiti South Senatorial District between 2011 and 2015, died on June 24 at the age of 75.
Leading the debate on a motion to honour the late senator during plenary on Wednesday, Yemi Adaramodu described him as an outstanding legal practitioner and politician whose integrity, commitment to public service and devotion to democratic ideals earned him widespread respect.
Adaramodu, who is also the Senate spokesman, said the late senator played a pivotal role as Chairman of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) in Ekiti State, mobilising support that contributed significantly to the emergence of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2023 general election.
He noted that Adeniyi’s passion for democracy inspired his active participation in politics, where he served with distinction as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market during his tenure in the National Assembly.
Urging the Senate to honour his memory, Adaramodu said the late lawmaker deserved recognition for his contributions to democratic governance and nation-building.
The motion received unanimous support from senators.

In his tribute, Enyinnaya Abaribe described the deceased as a committed legislator who made valuable contributions during his time in the Senate.
Recalling his warm personality, Abaribe said colleagues fondly nicknamed him “the herbalist” because he often joked that he would turn anyone who troubled him into a bird.
Similarly, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin said the late senator distinguished himself through his active participation in legislative work, particularly as a member of the Constitution Review Committee, and prayed for the repose of his soul.
Also contributing, Cyril Fasuyi commended Adeniyi’s leadership of SWAGA in Ekiti State, describing his efforts as instrumental in the mobilisation that supported Tinubu’s successful presidential bid.
In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the late senator as a dedicated parliamentarian and political mobiliser whose contributions extended beyond his years in the National Assembly.
The senators observed a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased and announced the constitution of a Senate delegation to pay a condolence visit to the family.
The delegation, chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, comprises Senators Yemi Adaramodu, Cyril Fasuyi, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Sunday Karimi, Abdul Ningi, Babangida Hussaini and Joel-Onowakpo Thomas.
The Senate President directed the delegation to report back to the chamber after the condolence visit.
