Barely five days after the National Assembly embarked on a recess to mark the third anniversary of the 10th Assembly, the Senate has recalled senators for an emergency plenary to address security matters on Tuesday, June 23.

In a formal notice by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, the leadership of the chamber directed all senators to return to plenary at 11am at the Senate Chamber, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The notice, issued on behalf of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said the emergency session was being convened to consider matters of urgent national importance.

“I am directed by the President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, to inform Senators that the Senate will reconvene in plenary. The purpose of this emergency sitting is to enable the Senate to consider matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention.”

The Senate also deeply regrets any inconvenience the sudden recall may cause lawmakers who had already left Abuja following last Thursday’s adjournment,” the statement read.
