Senate confirms 3 ambassadorial nominees

The Senate has confirmed Kayode Are (Ogun State), Aminu Dalhatu (Jigawa State) and Ayodele Oke (Oyo State) as ambassadorial nominees following their successful screening by the upper chamber.

The confirmation came after the consideration and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Sani Bello, which found the nominees suitable for diplomatic assignments.

Presenting the committee’s report, Bello said the nominees met all constitutional and procedural requirements and demonstrated the capacity to represent Nigeria’s interests abroad.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the plenary, congratulated the nominees and urged them to project Nigeria positively in their respective countries of posting.

“You are expected to be good ambassadors of this country, uphold our national values and protect Nigeria’s interests wherever you are deployed,” Akpabio said.

President Bola Tinubu had formally requested the Senate’s confirmation of the three nominees in a letter read on the floor of the Senate during plenary two weeks ago, shortly after lawmakers resumed from recess. The letter was read by Akpabio during the Senate’s session and subsequently referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening.

Notably, the three names were transmitted ahead of a larger batch of ambassadorial nominees later announced by the President, making them the first set of diplomatic nominees forwarded to the 10th Senate for confirmation.
