SECCIMA unveils compendium of 100 most outstanding Igbo entrepreneurs

From Jude Chinedu, Enugu

The South East Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines & Agriculture (SECCIMA) has launched a compendium highlighting 100 of the most outstanding Igbo entrepreneurs. The initiative celebrates their roles in boosting economic development, creating jobs, and driving growth in the region.

At the unveiling event in Enugu over the weekend, SECCIMA President Humphrey Ngonadi said the project aims to honour Igbo sons and daughters whose “entrepreneurial activities, intentions and exploits in the business world have resulted in economic development, employment generation and GDP growth in the South East and in Nigeria as a whole.”

Ngonadi called the compendium the result of “several months of research and extensive consultation.” He believes it will spark healthy competition among Igbo entrepreneurs worldwide. “It is a well-known fact that Ndigbo are a force to reckon with in Nigeria’s economy. Our people play major roles in Nigeria’s economy and our people excel in all parts of the world,” he said.

“Consequently, SECCIMA decided to recognize the contribution of those people who have excelled in their various callings. By doing this, we hope to provide the global material that will promote healthy competition for our people,” he added. Ngonadi also praised Maduka University Business School for its support in producing this key reference material.

Jasper Nduagwuike, Chairman of the planning committee, expressed delight that the 16-month project has come to life. “You are welcome to this occasion which is auspicious in every sense of the word. It is also gratifying to know that this project which started close to 16 months ago is finally being birthed and celebrated today,” he said.

Nduagwuike described it as an “intervention by SECCIMA to celebrate and encourage entrepreneurship.” Though not exhaustive, he said, “even the worst critic will concede to us that this painstaking task is a good reflection of reality.” The compendium will now be published every three years, with the next edition due in 2028.

Rev. Ugo Chime, speaking for the recognised entrepreneurs, called the effort long overdue. “There is a serious need for the recognition of entrepreneurs in the South East. Many have contributed to the growth and development of their communities, their local governments, their states and the entire South East but they died without being recognised,” he said.

“So I want to appreciate SECCIMA for making out to be able to have such a compendium such as this. I hope there will be an online copy of this so that wherever anyone is, he is going to have access,” he added.

The event attracted attendees from the private sector, academia, and public institutions, who praised SECCIMA for showcasing Igbo entrepreneurial excellence.
