SDP: We don’t question people’s religion, says presidential candidate, Adewale

By Chukwuma Umeorah

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adebayo Adewale, has said his party does not question people’s religion, but competence  and ability of the candidate to tackle issues bedevilling the country.

Adewale who spoke on a television programme monitored in Lagos, yesterday,  said religion should not be used as a criteria for choosing a candidate, saying  the country has had past presidents from different religion but none have been able to truly address the problems of the country.  He said that religion should make only 10 or 15 per cent of the parameter used in judging if a candidate has the broad-based sensitivity to rule a diverse nation like Nigeria.

“Since 1999 we came into civil rule, Christians have ruled, Muslims have ruled, in fact, both have ruined us. We should not use religion as a major criterion because of all the evils that have been done.“I am looking at it from a point of accountability, competence, and effectiveness because we are loosing time as a country,” he said.

Adewale pointed out that most people are concerned about region because of the fear of marginalisation and misinformation that the presidency is a reward.
