A former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Sam Egwu, has urged voters to scrutinise the administration of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls.

Egwu spoke yesterday in Abuja at the 20th anniversary lecture of the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), titled “Reclaiming Civic Space: The Rule of Law, Democratic Accountability, and the Future of Citizens’ Participation in Nigeria.”

He said citizens should not wait until election day to get involved in governance. They should remain engaged, question policies and demand answers from government officials.

Egwu also urged Nigerians to protect civic space, which he called “the bedrock of any open and democratic society”, where citizens and civil society organisations can organise, participate and communicate without hindrance.

CHRICED Executive Director, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said the centre was set up 20 years ago to address citizens’ exclusion from governance. Board member Dr Dayo Olaide said making democracy work was a collective responsibility that begins with speaking up and ensuring votes count.
