Scientists, engineers receive national innovation honours In Abuja

 

Nigeria’s leading scientists, engineers, and technology innovators were on Thursday recognised by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology for contributions driving research, industrial advancement, and digital transformation across the country.

The awards ceremony, held in Abuja, attracted representatives from federal research institutions, universities, engineering bodies, and technology organisations, with several awardees commended for projects influencing sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy, biotechnology, and smart infrastructure.

Recipients honoured during the event included Dr. Abdul Ibrahim, who received the Emerging Technology Innovation Award; Engr. Linda Okoro for Smart Infrastructure Systems Development; Prof. Samuel Adekunle for Scientific Research Leadership; and Mrs. Kemi Briggs for Artificial Intelligence Advancement.

Other professionals recognised at the ceremony were applauded for contributions in environmental sustainability, digital engineering, advanced manufacturing, and data systems innovation.

Officials of the Ministry stated that award recipients emerged from a rigorous review process coordinated by senior academics, research directors, engineering professionals, and policy experts within Nigeria’s science and technology community.

According to the Ministry, the selection process focused on originality, technical relevance, measurable impact, and contribution to national development priorities.

Speaking during the ceremony, government representatives described innovation as a critical driver of economic growth and industrial competitiveness, noting that the recognition programme was established to encourage locally developed scientific and technological solutions.

The Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting research-driven initiatives capable of strengthening Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem and long-term technological capacity.
