Following the directive by the Vice Chancellor of Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Prof Joseph Iorapuu, that the school be opened, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), BSU chapter has insisted that it is still on strike even as it warned its members to stay away from work or face disciplinary actions.
Recall that the University had on Tuesday, directed its staff to resume work while it promised to announce the date for students’ resumption subsequently.
Vice Chancellor, in a statement signed by the school’s Registrar, Mfaga Modoom, had urged all staff of the university to resume regular duties from Wednesday, September 28.
The statement read in part, “On the directive of the Vice Chancellor, I write to inform all staff, members of the university community and the general public that the university will be opened with effect from Wednesday, September 28.
“All staff of the university are hereby expected to resume regular duties from Wednesday, 28th September 2022. The resumption date for all categories of students will be announced in due course.”
But in a swift reaction, the union said “ASUU-BSU is still on strike declared by National body of ASUU.”
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Terrumun Gajir, the union said “The management of BSU has issued a circular directing the reopening of the university on Wednesday, 28/09/2022.
“You are advised to note that “The union did not close down the University. Any member found in violation of the strike action will face the Union’s disciplinary action.”
The union while urging members to remain calm and await further directives from the union told its members that the circular does not concern them.
Meanwhile, ASUU BSU has planned to hold an emergency congress on Thursday, September 29.
