Lagos State Governor Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the scene of the fire outbreak at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on Thursday afternoon.

The governor’s visit followed the outbreak of the fire on Wednesday evening (24 December 2025), which drew emergency response teams, including firefighters and other safety agencies, to the area.

At the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had yet to be determined.

Authorities confirmed no fatalities in the incident, though seven persons suffered injuries (mostly from smoke inhalation), while efforts continued to fully contain the fire and assess the extent of damage to the building.

Addressing journalists at the scene, Sanwo-Olu said the state government had set up a probe committee to investigate the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.

He commended first responders for their swift intervention, noting that their prompt action helped to avert loss of lives.

The governor also sympathised with occupants and business owners who lost property in the incident, assuring them of the state government’s support and commitment to ensuring public safety.
