Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to youth inclusion, as well as creating platforms that would foster tolerance among the people of the state.
The governor stated this at the 2024 International Day for Tolerance, which took place yesterday at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, with the theme: ‘Tolerance Projects: The Beauty in the Diversity of Human Groups.’
The governor emphasized the importance of teaching young people about inclusivity, urging them to navigate differences with an open mind and heart.
He highlighted that his administration is committed to ensuring peaceful coexistence for all residents in Lagos.
Represented by Mrs Oyeyemi Ayoola, his special adviser on Central Internal Audit, Sanwo-Olu stressed that promoting tolerance requires continuous efforts, including educational initiatives that foster empathy, love, and protection against hate and discrimination.
He also called for more platforms for dialogue to bring diverse communities together.
“As a government, we are committed to promoting initiatives that celebrate our diversity. We will continue to champion advocacy programmes focused on intercultural dialogue, ensuring that the younger generation learns the values of respect and understanding from an early age.
“We will also support community projects that encourage collaboration and friendship among people from different backgrounds. Building a truly tolerant society is an ongoing journey, and it demands constant vigilance against divisive forces and a firm commitment to educating our youth about compassion and understanding”, Sanwo-Olu said
The governor described tolerance as a key foundation for peace and stability, especially in a world increasingly challenged by intolerance and discrimination.
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to build a Lagos where everyone, regardless of their background, would feel valued and respected.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Ibrahim Layode, harped on the importance of fostering a positive and optimistic mindset among youths, both at home and on the global stage.
He emphasized the need to strengthen resilience among young people to help Lagos and Nigeria build an inclusive and tolerant society.
Layode noted that tolerance is a collective project, adding that Lagos is already implementing various policies aimed at promoting harmony.
He added that the state would continue to focus on these initiatives in the years ahead.
The commissioner also called for continuous engagement with young people in building a more tolerant society, stressing that cultivating tolerance requires deliberate actions from all citizens to promote understanding and unity.
