Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured residents that the long-awaited Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge will be opened to traffic during the Christmas season, despite missing its September completion deadline.

The governor gave the assurance during an inspection of the project to assess the progress of work and establish the reasons for the delay in its delivery.

Speaking with journalists after the inspection, Sanwo-Olu said construction of the iconic road furniture was about 80 per cent complete, expressing confidence that the remaining work would be finished in time for the festive season.

He attributed the delay to the complex engineering involved in constructing the bridge’s distinctive architectural structure, which incorporates more than 300 tonnes of steel and rises approximately 25 metres.

The governor acknowledged concerns over the missed September deadline but maintained that the technical demands of the project required careful execution to ensure safety, structural integrity and quality.

Beyond easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between Opebi, Mende and Ojota, Sanwo-Olu said the project would enhance the surrounding environment and create an attractive destination for recreation, culture and heritage.

He commended the contractors and officials of the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure for their commitment to the project, noting that they were working round the clock to ensure its timely completion without compromising safety and quality.

The Opebi-Mende-Ojota Link Bridge is expected to improve movement across the affected areas and provide motorists with an alternative route, helping to ease pressure on adjoining roads when it opens to traffic.
