Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads across the state, as the government steps up efforts to tackle deteriorating infrastructure and improve mobility during the dry season.
Acting on the directive, the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has intensified inspections of ongoing road projects to assess progress, enforce quality standards and accelerate work on critical routes.
The corporation’s General Manager, Tokunbo Ajanaku, led an inspection team to several roads in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area and other parts of the state to evaluate the progress of reconstruction and rehabilitation works.
In Oshodi-Isolo, the team inspected Godwin Omonuwa Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street, where reconstruction is underway to address infrastructure deficits and improve connectivity within the area.
Ajanaku said the projects, upon completion, would ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, improve access to residential and commercial areas and stimulate economic activities in the benefiting communities.
“These roads are important links within the Oshodi-Isolo axis, serving residents, traders, business owners and other road users daily. Their reconstruction will improve mobility, enhance road safety, reduce transportation costs and boost commercial activities,” he said.
The inspection also covered Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu Local Council Development Area; Awolowo Way in Ikeja; Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Shomolu; and Idimu-Ikotun Road in Alimosho.
According to Ajanaku, the inspections form part of the corporation’s monitoring and quality assurance measures to ensure that projects meet required standards and provide lasting benefits to residents.
He said the corporation had sustained emergency repairs and routine road maintenance during the rainy season, despite persistent rainfall that often hindered permanent interventions, particularly asphalt laying.
With improved weather conditions creating a more favourable environment for construction, Ajanaku said the corporation was intensifying reconstruction and rehabilitation works across the state.
He added that some maintenance operations were scheduled for night-time to minimise traffic congestion and disruption to commercial activities, while safety measures were being implemented to protect workers and road users.
Acknowledging concerns over roads yet to receive attention, the general manager said projects were prioritised based on the extent of deterioration, traffic importance, urgency and available resources.
He urged residents, motorists and traders to complement government efforts by keeping drainage channels free of refuse, avoiding the discharge of wastewater onto roads and preventing petroleum products from spilling onto asphalt surfaces.
“Our roads are our collective heritage. Government has the responsibility to provide and maintain them, but citizens also have a duty to protect them,” he said.
