  • President is champion of true federalism, says Lagos Governor

Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the Senate’s passage of the constitutional amendment bill to establish State Police.

The Senate on Wednesday approved all 26 clauses of the bill in Committee of the Whole, marking what analysts call the most significant shift in Nigeria’s security architecture in decades.

In a statement personally signed by him, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the parliamentary approval as “epochal.”

He said with State Police now on the table, President Tinubu has shown himself “a champion of true federalism”.

The move, said the governor, is a major victory in the battle against terrorism and other crimes.

The Governor praised the President’s “vision “ and “resilience”, noting that the State Police has been central to Tinubu’s reform agenda since his tenure as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

“Today is a great day for our country — a day to celebrate the triumph of genuine democratic and developmental ideas over parochial sentiments,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“State Police has been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999, when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria, and all thanks to a leader whose life is defined by service to our nation.” Sanwo-Olu said.

He praised the Senate for “making history” and urged the State Assemblies to follow suit and pass the Bill.
