Sanwo-Olu approves implementation of unions’ agreement for 3 state-owned varsities

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday approved the implementation of the agreement for four unions in the state-owned universities.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) in the three state-owned universities: Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) embarked on an indefinite strike to press home the implementation of the agreement by the state government.

The ongoing industrial action crippled academic and administrative activities on the three campuses and on Monday, the situation took a new turn when NASU members in the three institutions shut their main gates.

In a letter conveying the governor’s approval dated October 7, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule, and addressed to chairmen of ASUU in the three universities.

The one-page letter is titled: “Domestication, Implementation of ASUU, SSANU, NASU, NAAT Agreement in Lagos State-owned universities – Conveyance of Mr Governor’s Approval.”

The letter reads: “I wish to refer to the above subject and to convey the approval of Mr Governor, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on the demands presented by the leadership of the unions during the recent engagement with the state government.

“Mr Governor, in his magnanimity and commitment to industrial harmony and staff welfare in our tertiary institutions, has graciously approved the domestication and the payment of the 40 per cent CATA and 10 per cent Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for academic staff, adoption of the Readers and Professors’ monthly allowances respectively to N70,000 and N145,000 only and 35 per cent revised allowances for non-academic staff across Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions, effective from 1 January 2026 with the payment of the arrears in two tranches with October and November 2026 salaries respectively.”

The governor’s approval stressed that all the allowances for the unions are tax free.

According to Sule, the relevant agencies of government have been directed to commence the immediate implementation process of this approval in line with extant financial regulations.

Sanwo-Olu called on the union leaders to direct their members to suspend the ongoing industrial action and start work with immediate effect.

His words: “I sincerely appreciate the unions for their patience, maturity and understanding during the negotiation period and enjoin all members to continue to maintain industrial peace and to be more dedicated to their duties.”

Daily gathered that the chairmen of the unions and the vice-chancellors have received the state government circular.

One of the chairmen told our correspondent that he has summoned an emergency congress on Thursday to discuss the state government position.

Another chairman disclosed that emoluments for retired professors were not captured in the governor’s approval.
