Sanwo-Olu: Lagos will surmount hard times

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared that 2026 will be better and more glorious for Lagos State and Nigeria.

He spoke on Wednesday during the New Year’s Day service at the State House Chapel, Marina, where he prayed for God’s guidance and reassurance, noting that “with God, all will be well.” He also visited a mosque to participate in Muslim prayers as part of the New Year activities.

Sanwo-Olu offered prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, urging Nigerians to support the President’s bold initiatives aimed at addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.

“Lagos will continue to make progress. It shall be well with all citizens; 2026 will be a glorious year,” he said.

Reflecting on leadership and public service, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the transient nature of political office. “There will be political movements. I will continue to count my days; I have only one January 1 left in office. No position is permanent,” he said. He encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope, adding, “We will never give up, no matter the challenges. Nigeria will be greater.”

At the mosque, the governor called on workers to show greater dedication in the discharge of their duties, while also praying for the President, his family and all Nigerians.

The New Year’s Day service was attended by senior government officials, junior staff of the State House and members of the public. The sermon at the Christian service was delivered by Dr Bukola Oluwagbemiga, Director of Postgraduate Studies at Life Theological Seminary, Ikorodu. Speaking from Psalm 121 and John 10:27–30, he emphasized total reliance on God and urged the governor and other state officials to create an enabling environment for divine intervention in governance.

During the Muslim prayers, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs (Muslim), Dr Abdullahi Jebe, cautioned against hypocrisy and stressed the importance of unity and collective purpose.

The New Year services were coordinated by Dr Jebe and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Affairs (Christian), The Very Rev. Bukola Adebiyi. Prayers were offered for Governor Sanwo-Olu, his family and the people of Lagos State, as well as for the Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who was present, and his family. Additional prayers covered the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government, the THEMES Plus Agenda, civil servants and their families, a peaceful Nigeria and a greater Lagos State.
