Kaduna State government has said Governor Uba Sani’s recent disclosure he inherited a huge debt profile from his predecessor, Nasir el-Rufai, was prompted by accountability.
It also charged the media, as the fourth Estate of the Realm to advance governance and democracy by resisting the temptation to describea the revelation by the governor as a fight between godfather and godson.
The Kaduna State government disclosed this in a statement, yesterday.
“It is about accountability to the people of Kaduna State who elected us. They wanted answers to what they already know from the publications of the National Bureau of Statistics and FACC publications,” a source in the government said.
The source further said the fact that the figures were revealed at a town hall meeting confirms no mischief was intended.
“Being a responsible government, the governor only stated the state of the finances of the state, which unfortunately is in a terrible state.
“The governor is angry about the poor management of the loan, especially because despite the state’s indebtedness, the various projects have been left uncompleted with contractors owed about N100 billion and the fact that they are presenting ridiculous amounts in the region of over N120 billion to complete the projects.
“Who will be happy with this kind of mess? Again, your monthly allocation is being deducted, such that you cannot pay your salary. This month’s deduction was N7 billion, making it difficult for the government to pay salary.”
On the accusation that the governor supported the approval for the $350 million loan from the World Bank, the source said Governor Sani is supporting the state’s best interest, because he is convinced that El-Rufai would have managed the resources more prudently.
“Governor Sani did not ask that the loan be squandered. And he is disappointed it was. If Governor Sani’s appointees are ‘unserious clowns’ according to Bashir El-Rufai, it means Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor who first appointed them, appointed clowns that he imposed on Governor Sani,” the source said.
