Sagbama LG wins maiden Citiboi Super League in Yenagoa

The first ever Citiboi Inter-Local Government Super League has been concluded with Sagbama council area emerging champions following a one-all draw against tournament favorites, Southern Ijaw council area.

A total of ten teams participated in the eight-week league, comprising eight teams from the eight local government areas of the state and two teams made up of non-Bayelsans.

Already topping the league with 19 points, one point ahead of Southern Ijaw which has massed 18 points, the Sagbama team went into the final day of the league with high hopes, knowing fully well that a win or a draw would see them through as champions, while Southern Ijaw was on a mission probable, as they needed an outright victory to be crowned winners.

Sagbama ‘s Kenneth Egemuze broke the deadlock some minutes into the second half after heading in from close range, connecting Opus Demeoru’s cross.

With less than three minutes to go, Southern Ijaw equalised through their talisman, Oseke. A free kick from a teammate was blocked in the danger zone but the defenders could not clear their lines, allowing Oseke to tap the ball into the net.

The eight-week tournament ended with Sagbama finishing on 20 points.

Southern Ijaw came second with 19 points while Ekeremor came third on the log, followed by Nembe.

Southern Ijaw’s Oseke went home with the highest goal scorer’s award, Sagbama’s goalie was awarded the best goalkeeper, while Timi of Southern Ijaw emerged as the Most Valuable Player, with the trio going home with a fifty-thousand-naira cash prize.

Chairman of the occasion, High Chief Collins Cocodia lauded the organisers for using football as a tool for uniting the community and environs and urged the people to join hands with the governor in ensuring peace in the state so that more programmes will be organized to the benefit of the youths.

Hon. Oforji Oboku, the member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, at the House of Representatives, member representing Kolokuma/Opokuma at the House of Assembly, former CAF Medical Committee Member, Dr. Peter Singabele, Chairman, Bayelsa State Volunteers, Chief Lucky Asanakpo, in their goodwill messages, commended sponsor, Mr Joshua Igere Glory for organising the Super League.

In his remarks, the sponsor, Mr. Joshua Igere Glory, ‘Citiboi’, while thanking the dignitaries for honoring his invitation, said the idea of the Inter-Local Government Super League was to engage youths in the state through sports and football in particular.

The Chairman of the occasion, High Chief Collins Cocodia, was given an award of excellence for his numerous contributions towards capacity building of youths in the state, by the sponsor, through his record label, Official Citiboi Concepts.
