The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC ) has fixed August 9, 2025, for the conduct of fresh Local Government Council Elections in the state.
Chairman of RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd), disclosed the date during a stakeholders’ meeting and official unveiling of the 2025 local government elections timetable and guidelines held in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
Addressing the gathering, retired Justice Enebeli expressed the commitment of the RSIEC to ensure a free, fair, credible and unbiased local government council elections and urged the political parties to play by the rules.
He revealed readiness of the RSIEC to commence consultation and sensitization and further stakeholders’ meetings and private meetings with political parties on where questions would be entertained for a better election.

Justice Enebeli (retd), however, described the judgement of the Supreme Court as a temporary set back, which would strengthen the commission to come out stronger and better in August, 2025.
We have felt to move fast in tandem with changed and changing events in our dear Rivers State. The sole objective of this meeting is the formal unveiling of the guidelines and activities for the 2025 local government elections in Rivers State.
“As you are all aware, the 5th October, 2024 local government council elections conducted in Rivers State, was voided by the Supreme Court of Nigeria in the judgement delivered on 28th of February, 2025.”
Various political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, Nigeria Bar Association, religious organizations, the media, professional organizations, Civil Society Groups, Non-Governmental Organizations, community-based groups and the electorate were present at the meeting.
