Rotary International District 9110 has unveiled a plan to build a N100 million Mental Health Centre in Lagos. This was announced at the installation ceremony of its newly appointed 43rd District Governor, Ifeyinwa Ejezie which held in Lagos recently.
The event, which drew an array of religious, political, and civic leaders, was described by attendees as a historic investiture and a call to humanitarian action. Taking the helm of a district that oversees more than 150 Rotary Clubs across Lagos and Ogun States, Ejezie said the theme of her administration is, “Creating Hope in the World,” and the mental health center would be the flagship project of her tenure.
The proposed facility is expected to help in intervention and treatment services, spearhead community education and stigma reduction efforts and provide support for the vulnerable. “Mental health challenges, exacerbated by economic strain, social pressures, and post-pandemic realities, can no longer be ignored,” she said.
While the spotlight was on Governor Ejezie, much of the evening’s success was attributed to the Past Assistant Governor (PAG) Okechukwu Uche-Ukah, who chaired the Installation Planning Committee. Insiders credited him with transforming what could have been an uncolourful ceremony into a successful fundraising and advocacy platform.
Speaking to guests, he said: “This evening is the beginning of a bold fundraising effort to amplify Rotary’s humanitarian footprint.” Every part of the programme, from the choice of dignitaries to the speeches that were made, was reported to have been strategically designed to reinforce Rotary’s humanitarian mandate and mobilise support for the mental health project.
The ceremony drew notable figures including former Health Minister and Past Rotary District Governor Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, His Royal Highness Thomas Obidiegwe, Archbishop Daniel Okoh who is the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Senator Ganiyu Solomon, and Chief Segun Showunmi, who served as guest speaker.
