In a ceremony filled with pomp and excitement, the Rotary Club of Anthony Golden witnessed a significant transition as outgoing president, Gabriel Aye, handed over the mantle of leadership to Chidi Ogu. The annual handover event, held in Ogudu, Lagos, was attended by members, guests and distinguished Rotarians, physically and virtually. The event marked the official transfer of responsibilities from Aye to Ogu, signifying a new chapter in the club’s history.

The ceremony served not only as a moment of celebration but also as a reflective occasion where the club reviewed its achievements over the past year and set the stage for future initiatives. In his farewell address, Aye applauded the unwavering support, encouragement and commitment of club members. He expressed gratitude for the collaboration and robust synergy that existed during his tenure and urged members to extend the same support to his successor.

Highlighting the club’s achievements, Aye noted that funds generated during his tenure were effectively deployed to various initiatives, including peace and conflict prevention, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation projects, mental health workshops, maternal and child health programmes, basic education and literacy efforts, as well as economic and community development. He thanked the charter (founding) president, the immediate past president, the incoming president and all members for their support and goodwill, emphasizing that these contributions were crucial to the club’s successes.

Ogu expressed his delight and optimism for the upcoming year. He pledged to build on the legacies of his predecessors and lead the Rotary Club of Anthony Golden to greater heights. Ogu called for continued support from all members to achieve the club’s vision, stressing the importance of public image in increasing the understanding of Rotary’s work and attracting like-minded individuals to boost membership.

Ogu revealed that the club’s first project for the new Rotary year had already been completed, showcasing the club’s determination to sustain and expand its impact over the next five years. “Our goals for the year are audacious, yet achievable.

We intend to sustain and escalate efforts to enhance literacy, health, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), community development, and environmental sustainability initiatives within the Rotary Year 2024-2025 calendar,” Ogu stated.

The new Rotary year themed, ‘Magic of Rotary,’ aims to harness the transformative power of collective action to address pressing community issues. Ogu emphasized the theme’s reflection of Rotary’s potential to create significant impact through the diverse skills and resources of its members. He outlined plans to enhance literacy rates by supporting schools with resources, especially for needy students, and through mentorship programmes. The club will continue partnering with local educational institutions to provide vocational training, empowering students with skills for better employment opportunities.

The event’s highlights included the formal handover ceremony and the presentation of the staff of office, symbolizing the transfer of leadership to the new president, as well as the presentation of gifts to the outgoing president in appreciation of his service and contributions. The handover event was a resounding success, inspiring and motivating members to continue their community service under the new leadership of Ogu.

The Rotary year begins on July 1 and concludes on June 30 of the following year, with the transition of leadership marking the beginning of each new Rotary year. As members left the event, they were filled with a renewed commitment to serve their community through the Rotary Club of Anthony Golden.
