Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his departure from the national team’s camp after a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The federation’s Disciplinary Council announced the sanctions on Monday, October 19, after investigating the 41-year-old forward’s departure from the squad in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 30.
According to the ruling, the council upheld the charge against Ronaldo and found him guilty of an intentional disciplinary offence under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations.
The decision stated that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would serve “a 30-day suspension” and pay a “fine of €255”, according to reports by BeIN Sports, TalkSport and other media outlets.
Ronaldo reportedly left the camp ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark following a disagreement with Jesus over his role in the team.
The dispute followed Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27, during which Ronaldo warmed up but remained an unused substitute.
The Guardian reported that Ronaldo believed Jesus had broken his promise regarding his playing time.
Following his departure, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward apologised to supporters and indicated that he was willing to accept any punishment imposed by the federation.
However, the disciplinary ruling did not clarify which matches or activities the suspension would cover. It also did not state whether the period Ronaldo spent under provisional suspension would count towards the final sanction.
Portugal are scheduled to face Denmark on November 14, but Ronaldo’s availability for the fixture will depend on how the suspension is applied and the national team’s selection decisions.
Meanwhile, FPF president Pedro Proença has publicly backed the Portugal captain, describing him as one of the country’s most important football figures.
“We are in the home of the greatest asset Portuguese football has ever produced: Cristiano Ronaldo, our captain,” Proença said, as quoted by ESPN.
“Our captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, is one of our key pieces,” he added.
