Croatia captain Luka Modric has urged Portugal to give Cristiano Ronaldo a fitting farewell, describing the veteran forward as the greatest player in the country’s history.
Modric said Ronaldo deserved another opportunity to end his international career on the right note, regardless of whether he ultimately decides to retire from Portugal duty.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Modric said, “Cristiano is the greatest player in the history of Portugal, and he deserves another farewell and another ending with the national team.”
The former Real Madrid midfielder spoke amid uncertainty over Ronaldo’s future with Portugal following his recent fallout with coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo left the national team camp after accusing Jesus of breaking promises over his playing time and later said he remained available for selection.
Modric said he was saddened by the situation involving the 41-year-old forward, adding, “It’s sad to see this happening to Cristiano in his own country.”
He added, “Still, I think they will find a solution, because Cris deserves, whether he retires or decides not to continue with the national team, to have a great farewell that reflects what he deserves.”
“I don’t know exactly what happened, but I hope the situation gets resolved,” Modric said.
Ronaldo remains open to representing Portugal after any disciplinary action, provided he is fit and playing regularly for his club, keeping the possibility of a return to the national team alive.
