Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed why he walked out of Portugal’s training camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking promises and saying the dispute left him feeling that his place was no longer with the national team.
Ronaldo gave his version of the events in a lengthy statement now circulating on social media, the legendary forward explained that he had initially supported Jesus’ appointment and had been genuinely happy with the decision after the 2026 World Cup.
He said the Portuguese Football Federation president had asked him to reconsider his decision to leave the national team after the World Cup and later sought his opinion on the next coach.
Ronaldo said he told the president that Jesus was the right choice and was therefore pleased when the former Al-Nassr coach was appointed.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus subsequently called him and the pair met at the Cidade do Futebol, where the coach told him that he was essential to his plans.
Ronaldo said Jesus proposed that he play the first and last of four matches, while staying abroad for the other two fixtures in Norway and Denmark.
He said Jesus initially wanted him to remain in Portugal before joining the squad for the match at the Dragão, but Ronaldo rejected that proposal because he believed remaining behind without playing would send the wrong message.
Ronaldo said Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho, who had previously worked with Jesus, was present during the discussions.
He added that Jesus later visited him at home before the camp and that they reached an understanding. Ronaldo played against Denmark at Alvalade and handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes when he was substituted.
The dispute, however, escalated during Portugal’s match in Norway.
Ronaldo said an assistant coach asked him at lunch whether he was ready to play 30 minutes. Although doing so was outside his physical recovery plan, he agreed.
He then began warming up from half-time but was never introduced.
“And the rest is known. I started warming up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and no one called for me. The coach broke his promise.”
Ronaldo admitted that he was wrong not to greet the supporters after the match.
“At the end of the match, I just wanted everything to end with a win and to be alone. I did not go to greet the fans. A mistake for which I alone take responsibility, and which should not have happened.”
He apologised to the Portuguese people, supporters who travelled to watch him and other fans who had backed him throughout his international career.
Ronaldo said he met Jesus and Coutinho 48 hours later in an attempt to settle the dispute. According to him, they agreed that Jesus would explain publicly what had happened and acknowledge that Ronaldo had never demanded to play.
Ronaldo said he would not feature against Denmark but would return for the match at the Dragão.
He also said a video meeting was held with Tiago Craveiro, after which a document setting out what had been agreed was prepared, approved by Ronaldo and delivered to Jesus.
Ronaldo said Jesus subsequently failed to reflect their private agreement during his press conference, using a tone and expressions that he considered inconsistent with what had been agreed.
The Portugal captain said that was the second time he believed Jesus had broken his word.
“This was the second time he broke his promise.”
Ronaldo said he therefore decided to leave the camp rather than wait for another assurance that might not be honoured.
“I decided to leave the training camp without waiting for another unfulfilled promise. For me, the truth remains the most important thing in relationships between people. No matter how painful it is, I want the truth to be told to me.”
He said he later asked the federation president and Jesus to tell him honestly if they no longer wanted him in the national team.
According to Ronaldo, they told him that his place remained in the squad.
He insisted that he had never interfered in the technical or tactical decisions of any Portugal coach during his nearly 25-year international career.
“I never interfered, at any time, in any technical or tactical decision of any coach or national team official throughout nearly 25 years of my career.”
He added:
“I accept, whether good or bad, what they propose. I respect the decision, and when they break my promise, I feel that my place is not here.”
Ronaldo also accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to his teammates.
“I also apologise to my national team teammates for leaving the training camp. For despite my complete breach of the coach’s trust, as everyone who witnessed these conversations can attest, I should not have done that. The responsibility falls on me alone.”
He said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him for leaving and argued that his status as captain should be considered an aggravating factor rather than a reason for leniency.
“The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I believe the punishment should not be reduced.”
Ronaldo said he was prepared to accept the consequences of his actions because football’s rules should apply equally to everyone.
He also rejected suggestions that the dispute meant an immediate end to his international career.
“I can promise all my fans, and especially the Portuguese people, that we will play one or more farewell matches; there will be time for that.”
Ronaldo recalled the death of his father and said his commitment to Portugal had always gone beyond club football.
He said that when he received news of his father’s death while on national-team duty, he chose to remain with the squad until after the following day’s match.
“I did for my country what I would never do for any club.”
The veteran forward concluded by reaffirming his availability for Portugal after any punishment, provided he remains physically fit and is playing for his club.
“So, if I am physically fit, playing with my team, and hopefully scoring goals, after my suspension period ends, I will be available, as I always have been, to compete and win with our national team.”
He ended his statement with a firm declaration:
“This, believe me, is the absolute truth.”
