Roland Ezuruike wins Nigeria’s first medal at 2026 Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria has opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after para powerlifter Roland Ezuruike claimed a silver medal in the men’s Lightweight Group A event.

The experienced Nigerian lifter delivered an impressive performance throughout the competition, finishing second to hand Nigeria its first podium finish of the Games.

Ezuruike made successful opening lifts and remained in contention for the gold medal before attempting a 190kg lift that would have set a new Commonwealth Games record. However, he was unable to complete the final lift, settling for silver.

He concluded the event with a total of 153.9 points from two successful lifts, securing Nigeria’s first medal of the competition.

The silver medal won by Roland Ezuruike provides an encouraging start for Team Nigeria as athletes continue to compete across various events in pursuit of more podium finishes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
