As part of its strategies to create a safer motoring environment, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has introduced an innovative mobile app that puts road safety in the hands of road users across Nigeria for a safer and more convenient motoring experience.
The FRSC mobile application and National Crash Information Recording System (NACRIS) were launched on Thursday, September 5, 2024, in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
While the FRSC Mobile App provides information on the corps’ products and services, the related NACRIS addresses road traffic crashes and other road safety issues.
Speaking at the event Akune described the app as a milestone in the history of the FRSC.
The SGF lauded the digital transformation of the corps’ operational activities, which he noted was designed to improve road safety administration and help the organisation to deliver on its mandate.
Senator Akume was optimistic that both the mobile app and NACRIS would raise awareness and sensitise drivers and passengers to potential causative factors of road traffic crashes.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, stated that the initiatives were the latest in the efforts of his organisation in formulating and implementing policies aimed at improving road safety administration.
“The launch of the FRSC Mobile App and NACRIS is a deliberate effort to key into the Renewed Hope Agenda. The FRSC Mobile App is a software application that can be used on smart phones to alert the public on sensitive road safety issues, the Corps Marshal remarked
On the other hand, according to Mohammed, the NACRIS was designed by the corps to promote a multi-sectoral approach to crash reporting and data storage.
The FRSC Mobile Application enables vehicle owners and others to access FRSC’s products and services without having to be present in any of their offices.
Guests at the event were informed that the initiative was in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President, because it dovetails into the government’s emphasis on the ease of doing business and enhancing the safety of lives and properties of all road users.
With the FRSC Mobile App, a vehicle owner can monitor speed and stay safe on the road; identify black spots and avoid crashes; report emergencies with just a click; and verify vehicle registration and driver’s licence status.
The app can also help the user stay updated with the corps’ National Traffic Radio; as well as set reminders for crucial vehicle maintenance and documentation.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Corps Commander Segun Ogungbemide, disclosed on telephone that the launch of the app was preceded by months of tests and evaluation by the technical team to ensure satisfactory function.
“The is the first version (of the FRSC Mobile App) which is open to observation and input for better second version,” Ogungbemide stated, assuring that users’ feedback would be used to improve subsequent versions as time goes on.
Information made available to the Daily Sun indicates that for a vehicle owner to begin to experience its functions, they are expected to first download the app and log in with their email address and password.
“You will see two early warning monitors: The left monitor alerts you about your vehicle’s speed when you exceed 100 kilometres. The right monitor alerts you when you are approaching black and dangerous spots.
“They help you stay alert as they work real in time.”
The app also features Self-Service tabs, including an emergency tab that provides a number in the event of an accident or misconduct, one that helps to check driver’s licence status, and another that enables the user to report the case of a stolen vehicle.
An FRSC Mobile App user can also verify their vehicle’s plate number with the Vehicle Identification System, set reminders, as well as obtain information on training schools and certification.
The software provides valuable information on Road Transport Safety Standardisation Schemes (RTSSS), one of FRSC’s most innovative initiatives.ad T
