Rivers: Road accident claims one life

A fatal road accident along Ikwerre Road/Ekwe Street in the Mile 3 area of Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Friday morning claimed the life of a wheelbarrow pusher identified as Ifeanyichukwu Udo.

Eyewitnesses said the tragic incident occurred a few minutes before 6:00 a.m. when a Mitsubishi commercial bus reportedly rammed into and crushed Udo, believed to be in his early 40s, while he was standing by the roadside at the Ikwerre Road/Ekwe Street junction.

According to sources, another pedestrian who was also struck by the vehicle narrowly escaped death but sustained injuries.

The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby clinic for medical attention by traffic personnel and operatives of the Nkpolu Police Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Ogbuefi Henry King.

The sources further disclosed that the driver of the commercial bus, identified simply as Saturday, was arrested at the scene, while the vehicle was impounded and taken to the police station for further investigation.

Confirming the incident to journalists, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Agabe Blessing Karbolo, said one person lost his life in the accident.

“I can confirm the accident which claimed one life along the Mile 3/Ikwerre Road axis of Diobu, Port Harcourt. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested, while an investigation into the incident is ongoing,” the police spokesperson said.
