Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has charged 3,280 members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to serve selflessly and responsibly as a debt owed to Nigerians.

Fubara gave the charge at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Nonwa-Gbam in Tai Local Government Area, during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I orientation course.

The governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Bureau, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Promise Oguzie, urged the corps members to integrate seamlessly with their host communities.

He said they must respect the culture and traditions of their hosts, be role models and provide solutions to challenges in their places of assignment rather than create problems.

The governor also urged them to take the post-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, training seriously, noting that it would equip them to create wealth and become employers of labour.

In his farewell address, the Rivers State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Moses Oleghe, commended the corps members for their resilience and doggedness during the three-week orientation exercise.

Oleghe said the corps members have imbibed the culture of nation-building and team spirit with Nigeria first in all they do.

He lauded Governor Fubara for approving and implementing a new state allowance for corps members serving in the state.

He disclosed that corps members posted outside Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas, PHALGA, will receive N35,000 monthly, while those posted to Obio/Akpor and PHALGA will get N20,000.

According to him, the differential allowance is a deliberate policy to curb the massive and unwarranted lobbying by parents and guardians to have their wards posted to urban centres.

The State Coordinator thanked security agencies and other collaborating stakeholders for their support which ensured a successful camping exercise and charged the corps members to be good ambassadors of the NYSC scheme at their Places of Primary Assignment.

No fewer than 3,280 corps members, comprising 1,380 males and 1,900 females, successfully completed the orientation course.

Ends.
