Rivers crisis: LG association chairman chased from council secretariat

Allwell Ihunda, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria’s Rivers State chapter, managed to escape with his life on Tuesday when angry youths chased him along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Ihunda, the departing Chairman of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, was on his way to the council headquarters with several aides and security personnel when the event happened.

According to a Punch report, he alighted from his vehicle and attempted to enter the council, but was stopped by a group of youths at the entrance.

Almost immediately, the youth began yelling and following him. They attempted to grab Ibunda, who rushed towards his car.

However, the security detail assigned to the Mayor, as he is affectionately known, rebuffed the youths’ attempts to approach their principal, firing into the air to disperse them.

It was gathered that Ihunda rushed into a black SUV, accompanied by aides, and drove away while the youths continued firing into the air.

It was also heard that Some of the youth were shouting, “That is him, Allwell. Chase him. Who is he? Look at him, Mayor is running. Chase him. Are you mad? God punish you.

“Don’t run, come, you will see pressure. We are not afraid of you. You are mad. Thunder will fire you.”
